Tefillin are a Jewish ritual object consisting of two black leather boxes ("houses") bound by leather straps. They are worn on the arm and head during the morning prayer and contain parchment scrolls inscribed with four passages from the Torah. This commandment symbolizes the individual's connection to the Creator and serves as a remembrance of the Exodus from Egypt. Biblical sources for the commandment: The commandment is mentioned several times in the Torah as an explicit instruction to bind God's words as a sign upon the hand and as a reminder between the eyes. These sources are central—for example, Exodus 13:9: "And it shall be for you a sign upon your hand and a reminder between your eyes."
